Mikhayla Peterson's profile

Bodum Multi-plug exam project for 2018.

Brief:
Designing a multi-plug in relation to a brand while solving the problems of existing multi-plugs.
Research of the brand identity.
Research done on the brands advertising style and layout.
Research done on existing multi-plugs, problems, solutions and the injection molding requirements.
For ideatation I explored all the problems in the kitchen as well as existing Multi-plugs and tried to come up with possible solutions that I could use in my design. I saw that the kitchen consists of permanent and non-permanent appliances, which I considered in my design.
I explored many types of designs that could possibly solve most of the problems that a multi-plug experiences in the kitchen.  I wanted to come with a design that was aesthetically pleasing, easy to clean and easy to access. I then realised that not only does the existing multi-plugs look unattractive but the plugs that are plugged in gives it more reason to hide it.So I then tried to come up with designs that would hide the plugs that are constantly plugged into the multi-plug, thus making it appealing to the eye.
Mock- ups showing a rotating pop up plug to a free standing plug in a protection box.
My final design consisted of a free standing multi-plug that is able to move around the kitchen. It has a sockets for permanent and non-permanent appliances. The multi-plug is in a projection box that hides the plugs of the permanent appliances as well as protects the plug. The plug can be removed from the box to be cleaned. There is sockets in the front for quick access.
Final prototype made from ABS. The design is aimed to become an accessory I any kitchen, well solving the problems of hygiene, easy access and cable management.
